The name is believed to derive from a Cherokee word meaning "between two hills." The community is best known as the home of the Tulsa Port of Catoosa, one of the largest and most inland river ports in the United States.
The Port of Catoosa, opened in 1971 and formally dedicated by President Richard Nixon, sits at the head of navigation for the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System. Its 2,000-acre industrial park houses over 70 businesses employing more than 3,000 workers, generating an annual economic impact of over $300 million. The port has handled over 75 million tons of waterborne cargo since opening.
